September Events in Jackson Hole

There is a certain crispness in the air in the morning that was absent just last week. It is the time of year when some of the aspen leaves begin to hint towards a more golden hue, and elk can start to be heard bugling in the park and the wilder reaches of the valley. While many consider Labor Day to mark the unofficial end of summer, September in Jackson still offers much to do.

The first half of September in Jackson is characterized by several signature events, most notably Old Bill’s Fun Run. Old Bill’s is the primary fundraising event for the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole. While the run/walk is the central event, the surrounding weeks are dedicated to raising funds for local nonprofits – funds that are graciously matched by an anonymous donor – affectionately referred to as “Mr. and Mrs. Old Bill.” Two teams from Jackson Hole Sotheby’s International Realty have made the additional pledge to support our community as Business Co-Challengers – special thanks to Tom Evans, and Mercedes & Laurie Huff for their commitment and community leadership. There is no better time than now to earmark a donation for your favorite causes and to strengthen our valley as a whole. For more information about the race and surrounding events, visit the Community Foundation’s page. Online race registration is open until 5pm, Friday, September 11th in 5k and 10k lengths, in competitive and recreational classes.

Racers of a different sort will also be crossing the finish line in Jackson Hole on Saturday. The Lotoja Classic is a just-over 200-mile bike race beginning in Logan, Utah and finishing in Jackson (or more accurately – Teton Village). The race, whose coveted registration closed in the spring, is the longest one-day USA Cycling-sanctioned bike race in the country. Those interested in checking out the race can do so throughout the region as racers ride up the Snake River Canyon from Alpine through Jackson, and the final push out the Moose-Wilson Road to Teton Village. Keep an eye out for cyclists on the road and pathways throughout Star Valley and Jackson Hole.

Lotoja riders spin through Alpine on their way to the finish line in Teton Village.

Looking to slow down the pace a little? The renowned Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival runs from September 9-20th and offers more than fifty unique events. Highlights include the Western Design Conference, Palates & Palettes Gallery Walk (.pdf link), Jackson Hole Showcase of Homes, 20th Annual Jackson Hole Quick Draw Art Sale & Auction as well as special openings and events at galleries throughout town. The real estate market in Jackson Hole remains strong eight months into 2015.
